Church of God Central Eastern Region

Shown on the cover page is a baptism service in the tribal village of Kambari, Orissa, India. Eventhough we are facing lots of opposition, God is working in the midst of the tribal people and last march 32 people witnessed Lord Jesus Christ in Water Baptism.

The Central Eastern Region, established in 1994, has chosen the city of Calcutta to be its regional headquarters. This region consists of the following States of India. Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal, Nagaland, Assam, the Islands of Andamans and a portion of Madhya Pradesh. Many Ministers and believers both in India and abroad have been praying for this ministry in Eastern India. God is opening new avenues each day for the Gospel to reach the unreached areas. We currently have 72 Church of God churches, 70 pastors and 15 mission stations in various parts of East India.

Of all the Eastern States, Orissa needs the most attention. Our concentration is focused to this State, due to its present desperate conditions. Orisons’ agriculture based economy is never at its best due to the many recent natural calamities. Nearly 37% of Orisons’ land mass consist of forested areas that cannot be easily accessed. Furthermore, a good percentage of its residents belong to tribal communities. Illiteracy is wildly prevalent among them and most of all lack the basic necessities to sustain their livelihood. They have never had an opportunity to even hear the name of Jesus Christ.

However, we believe that one of the many methods to reach these tribal people is through charitable and social programs such as education and some technical training. It is imperative to have such grass roots establishments there as local chapters are very effective mediums for reaching them. It is for these reasons that we have focused in on the State of Orissa. In July 1996, by the grace of God, we were able to open the doors to he Elim Bible Training Center (EBTC) in the “Steel City of India.” Rourkela, Orissa. The Mission of this training center is to give short term Bible training to the soldiers of the Cross and to send them into the mission fields upon completion of the training.

The first year only brought nine students to this training center, and the five that graduated went out to the mission fields. The second year started in August 1997 with 13 students. Out 13 eight have recently been graduated and sent them out to the new gospel fields. We wish to bring the training center to a new plateau in missionary education in the near future. With this vision we hope to be able to enroll fifty students in the next school year.

However, in order to accept an increase in student body we are in need of a larger building to house all the new comers. Approximately five acres of land is required to accommodate all the buildings and facilities. We have drawn up a comprehensive plan that meets all the standard requirements that the Orissa government requires.

Upon completion of this project the center will consist of two buildings. One will hold classrooms, library, chapel, dinning hall, kitchen and dorm style rooms for both students and teachers. The other will be an administrative building that will house a day school for the tribal children. The estimated cost of undertaking this huge project for both the purchase of the land and the construction is $100,000 or Rs. 3, 80,000.

Plans include starting a sewing school and other job oriented technical training programs for the benefit of the local tribal community. This will equip the underprivileged tribal people and further improve their living conditions for the society as a whole. Other beneficial projects include a medical clinic and a fish farm.

As you know, none of this will be possible without your help. You can be a part of this endeavor with your generous contributions in building the kingdom of God one project at a time.

Equip Our Youngsters
Babu K. Iype M. S., Dallas, USA.

One of the major challenges of the churches in this era is to equip our younger generation for the ministry in the 21st century. The time has come that the Pentecostal churches especially the malayalee Pentecostal churches in the United States have to pay more attention to this crucial issue. Very often we concentrate on our own agenda and seldom pay attention to the spiritual well being of our next generation. The children are always looking toward their parents and the leadership of the churches for guidance and answers. Unless there is a willing ear to listen their concerns it is hard to win them and keep them in our faith and in our churches. We are living in a world in which it is very easy for our next generation to get involved in all kinds of ungodly things. Committing sin is a mouse click away in cyber space. How many of us are paying attention to this serious situation?

Day in and day out we hear about serious crimes committed by children as young as 8 years old. Television and newspapers always bring these horror stories and some even glorify the people and children committing these crimes. As a result of this more people are adopting the path of destruction and violence. Before something horrible happen in our communities and churches, we need to wake up to face the reality because time is limited. This is the time for the churches to get involved in the matters of our younger generation. Differences in opinion cause schisms and divisions within church. Since these differences remain unresolved, many members leave the church. Friendship between our young generation, which they have developed for years is being broken. This will inflict deep wounds in their minds, which may lead them away from our faith and churches. We need to do everything possible to keep our children and mold them as a valuable asset to the kingdom of God.

The way to equip our younger generation is to go back to the Bible and teach them the sound doctrines of the Bible. A believer who is weak in the knowledge of the Bible is always vulnerable to the attacks of the devil. When Jesus Christ was on this earth, we read in Mathew chapter 4 that the tempter Satan came to Jesus and tried to tempt him while he was in the wilderness. Satan thought Jesus was very vulnerable, because he was fasting for 40 days. Having this knowledge, Satan approached him, quoting the verses from the Bible. We can find that Jesus himself rebuked Satan by quoting scriptures. We need to understand that verses of the Bible, because that has more power than our own words. It was spoken by the servants of God through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Few people show any interest to learn the word of God. Many churches do not have systematic Bible study program. If we can get the children involved I believe they will listen and learn the word of God.

We need to help them to be equipped with the power of the Holy Spirit. The churches need to pay more attention to the teachings of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Without the power of the Holy Spirit in our life, we cannot lead a victorious Christian life. The Pentecostal churches need to come back to the experience of Pentecost rather than the name of Pentecost. In order to win a battle with the powers of darkness we need to possess the right weapons. Our weapons are the Word of God and the Power of the Holy Spirit. Encourage our youngsters to tarry for the anointing so their witnessing will be effective. The Holy Spirit cannot manifest in our midst very often because we have not prepared ourselves to receive it. We have to have a pure heart and lead a holy and separated life until then, we cannot experience the power of God in our life. God does not fill any vessel with the power of the Holy Spirit, but fills only the right vessel. So let us submit ourselves in the hands of the great potter so that he can mold us as an honorable vessel so that God can fill it with His glory. So let us show our younger generations the importance of the Word of God and the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

We need to equip our youngsters with a burden for the lost souls. Evangelization is the greatest mission of the church. God never intended the church to be limited inside the four walls of the building. The church needs to reach out to the communities and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. The greatest joy of a child of God on this earth is to bring another lost soul into the kingdom of God. We need to teach and train our younger generation for this great mission of the church.

Dear friends, if we can equip our younger generation with these tools, they are going to be victorious in their Christian life. Bible says: “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.” (psalms 119:9). May God bless you all. Amen.

Justification
Dr. Sara John, Dallas, USA.

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1

What does that statement really mean? I have often wondered that, actually it is very simple because anything that has to do with our understanding of God Almighty, He makes it simple.

Few would say they do not want salvation. But many seek it where it cannot be found. Many think by being good, by doing good works they will be saved. By giving, doing, and striving they think they will be saved. Others think by adhering to the law will save them. Still others believe that their good character will determine their entrance into heaven. All these are important but there is only one way to God. Jesus Christ is the door and faith is the key that unlocks that door.

Man is sinful from birth and there are two problems he faces, death and guilt. The “wages of sin is death”. Since we all sin, we are dead in our trespasses; that means we cannot help ourselves out of this problem. Only divine life can save us. God provides the divine answer to our problem of death and guilt. That is regeneration and justification. Regeneration means to bring to life again and that is change that takes place in the life of a born again believer. Justification is our standing before God. We are accepted as righteous in the eyes of God. It is as if I had committed no sin in my life. We understand that God Almighty is Holy; and we cannot approach Him without being justified. That way is only through Jesus Christ.

Justification originates from grace (unmerited favor) and it is received through the redemptive and substitutionary work of Christ. Jesus Christ died in your place because in the scriptures it says the “wages of sin is death but the free gift is eternal life through Jesus. Justification is objective. We have nothing to do with it. It is a state of being declared righteous because Christ pardoned our sin and that produces peace with God. Without being justified God Almighty cannot look at us because we are unholy and our nature is hostile to God. Christ is our peacemaker and we become the peace takers. Accept this sacrificial love

Justification is not merely forgiveness; it deals with our new position and relationship because we are restored to fellowship with God. The believer has access into the grace of God by faith in Christ. We can go boldly to God without being afraid and we also have a firm foothold through Christ. You are a child of God.

Justification brings to the believer a hope of the glory of God. Dangers may come but a believer can stand firm and unshaken. Hope in God never disappoints us because the love of God is given without measure to believers.

God provided salvation through His Son Jesus Christ because man is weak. Man is incapable of working out a righteousness of our own because we are not strong enough to break the power of sin or to achieve a righteousness that would commend us to God. Our ungodliness and the fact we were enemies of God led us to constantly missing the mark or sinning. It is while we were in this state Christ died for us, thus demonstrating His love for us. That is why Christ came at the time appointed by the Father when mankind needed the Savior the most.

When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and ask Him to forgive you of our sins and live a life that is pleasing to Him, you are truly blessed in this life and in the one to come. You are considered not guilty in the presence of God Almighty, you are a child of God with all the privileges of being God’s child, you know that your prayers are being heard and answered. I challenge every person reading this to do that. The only way to God is through Jesus Christ and Him alone.

The Works of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament
By: Rajeev Chandra, St. Louis, Missouri

Introduction

About 2000 years ago in the city of Jerusalem, on the day of Pentecost, the gift of the Holy Spirit was Poured out on 120 Jews assembled in prayer and supplication (Acts 1:14, 2-4). This was a significant epoch in the annals of human history since it ushered in what may be termed as the age of the Holy Spirit. History may be divided into distinct ages corresponding to the work of the members of the Godhead: the Age of the Father, the age prior to the birth of Christ; the Age of the Son, the age from the birth to the resurrection of Christ; the age of the Holy Spirit, the age from the day of Pentecost to the second advent of Christ; the Age of the Son, the Millennium; and the Age of the Father, the Eternal State. While the consummate Godhead was present and active through all ages, each age is segregated by the dominant role played by the respective member of the Godhead1 History is currently at the Age of the Holy Spirit, eagerly awaiting the second advent of Christ and the Eternal State. Much study and research have gone into the work of the Holy Spirit in this present age, especially in the Pentecostal, Charismatic circles. Yet Biblical inquiry into the subject is generally limited to the New Testament. The purpose of this paper is to examine the Holy Spirit's role and function in the Old Testament Age, where God the Father played the dominant role. This paper will also offer a comparative study of the Holy Spirit's function during the Old Testament period and the present age.

Translating the Hebrew word Ruach

There are about 378 occurrences of the Hebrew word Ruach in the Old Testament. It may be translated to mean, "wind" (Ps- 104:4; Ex. 10:13; 14:21; Ps. 1:4; Job 21.18), "breath" (Job 4:9; 9:18), "life force" (Ps. 146:4) or "spirit' (Ex. 1:2: Gen. 6:3: Gen. 41: 8; 1 Sam. 16:13)2 Ruach is a difficult word to translate since it can always be confused with neshamah that also means breath. Another problem encountered by the translators was in establishing the meaning of roach in the context of a given passage.

Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

The Holy Spirit was extant and operative from the beginning of the Age of the Father. This can be observed from Gen. 1:2, where the Bible records that the spirit of God moved upon or hovered over the face of the waters. Majority of the Old Testament references to the operation of the Holy Spirit concern with His work in man, especially the men and women chosen by God for a special purpose, such as kings, judges and Prophets. Extraordinary and supernatural feats by such men of the body, mind and spirit are attributed to the presence of the Spirit of God.

Diversities of Gifts

The activity of the chosen vessels under the influence of the Spirit of God varied. When the Spirit of the Lord came upon Bezaleel (Ex- 35:31-34), he was bestowed upon with wisdom, understanding, knowledge and all manner of workmanship to craft exqusite works in gold, silver, brass, to cut and set stones, to carve wood and to make cunning work. When the Spirit of the Lord came upon the seventy elders of the people of Israel (Num- 11:24,25), upon Saul (I Sam. 10:10, I Sam. 19:23,24), upon the messengers of Saul (I Sam. 19:20), upon Baalam (Num. 24:2) and other prophets, they prophesied the Word of the Lord. Joshua was iinparted wisdom by the Spirit of the Lord (Dt. 34:9). Samson, Jephthah, Gideon and other men of war were meted out supernatural strength and ability of perform deeds of valor against the enemies of Israel. Saul was transformed into a new man when Spirit of the Lord came upon him (I Sam. 10:6). Thus, it may be inferred that the Spirit of the Lord bestowed diverse gifts to people as He saw fit.

Indwelling of the Spirit of the Lord

The cry of David in Psalms 51:11 that God should not take His Spirit from him, seems to indicate a permanent indwelling of the Spirit of God in David. The indwelling presence of the Spirit of the Lord must have been quite valuable to David to warrant such a cry. At the time of his calling to ministry, Ezekiel records; "And the Spirit entered into me when He spake unto me, and set me upon my feet..." (Eze. 2:2). Daniel was renowned as one indwelt by the Spirit of the Lord (Dan. 4:8). When Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David, the Bible says that: "the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward" (1 Sam. 16:13) God speaks to Isaiah and tells him that: "My Spirit that is upon thee, and my words that which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart..." ( Isa. 59:21). Rea puts forth a distinction between the indwelling of the Spirit on the believers in the New Testament and Old Testament period as:

..Verses which might indicate that the Spirit did in fact indwell OT Believers
contain the Hebrew proposition 'in.' Gen. 41:38 and the verses in Daniel are alike
in that a heathen ruler observes a divine spirit in a faithful follower of Yahweh.
In the case of both Joseph and Daniel it was their ability to interpret dreams, not
a question of deep holiness of life, that evoked the comments of Pharaoh and the
Babylonian rulers, respectively. The two references in Ezekial (2:2, 3:24.) state
that 'the Spirit entered me-.' In each case this indwelling must have been temporary:
Ezekiel was filled with the Spirit for a certain amount of time, the duration of the
prophetic event-. The Spirit would heighten the prophet's mental ability so that he
could understand and remember what would be revealed to him. Receiving prophecies
involved repeated fresh anointing and empowering, not a continuous indwelling of the
	Spirit.

Rea further argues that Johannine writings shed further light to whether or not Old Testament believers were indwelt by the Spirit of the Lord. From John 7:79, he argues that the Holy Spirit was not yet given to the believers and therefore there was no permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit in Old Testament believers. There is another school of thought that the Spirit of the Lord did indeed indwell in people during the Old Testament times. This view seems a logical deduction from the word of God, as he communed with Moses in Numbers 11:17-25. God tells Moses that He will take of the spirit that was upon Moses and put it on the seventy elders of Israel-. The word "upon" (al) very strongly implies that the spirit was resident Moses and God was going to take a part of the spirit and impart it to the elders of Israel. The New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT) agrees that the spirit was indeed resident on Moses, however, infers from the resident nature of the spirit that it was Moses' spirit- NICOT says of this incident: The question arises whether this spirit (Ruach), part of which is transferred by Yahweh from Moses to the elders, is Moses' spirit or Yahweh's Spirit that is upon Moses. On the side of it being Moses' spirit is the fact that this spirit is already upon (al) Moses, and not a special imbuement poured from on high on these elders. Subsequent reading of the chapter reveals that when God took of the spirit that was upon Moses and imparted it to the elders, it is recorded that all the elders prophesied (Num. 11 -25). Prophecy is divinely inspired and clearly is not the manifestation of the working of the human spirit but the Divine. Thus, we have to disagree with NICOT on the nature of the spirit that was resident Upon Moses and conclude that the Holy Spirit was indeed resident on Moses. The major distinction between the working of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and the New is that in the Old, the Holy Spirit only interacted with a few chosen vessels. However, in the New Testament the Holy Spirit was promised to all flesh (Acts. 2:17) and there is no ambiguity regarding the indwelling (I Cor, 3:16). The life and testimony of Christians all over the world validate the fulfillment of this promise of God both in the early church era as well as the present day.

Departure of the Spirit of the Lord from People

The Bible records in several places the departure of the Spirit of the Lord from the people in whom He indwelt, due to their transgressions, The Spirit of the Lord left Samson and he did not know that the Lord was departed from him (Judges 16:20). King Saul also went through the same predicament. The Bible says that the Spirit of the Lord left Saul and an evil spirit from the presence of the Lord troubled him. The departure of the Spirit of the Lord is always associated with transgression and breaking of the covenant by the human vessel. Saul grieved the Spirit of the Lord by gross disobedience while Samson indulged in sexual immorality. It is seen that grace was given to both but they failed to appropriate. Saul was warned several times by Samuel and Samson transgressed on several occasions. All these incidents seem to form a pattern. The vessel is chosen, separated for a specific missions, and is empowered for that mission by the Spirit of the Lord. When the vessel ceases to hear the voice of God and begins to fall into sin and disobedience, grace is given for a period. True to God's word that His Spirit shall not always strive with man (Gen. 6:3), after a certain period of grace, if fruits of repentance are not observed in the vessel, the Spirit ceases to strive and departs from the vessel. The best illustration of this is the life of Saul and David. Saul was warned several times by the prophets, but he did not heed to the voice of God and continued to live in disobedience. Eventually, after the period of grace the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul. David, however, when he heard the voice of God through the prophet Nathan, repented immediately and appropriated the period of grace. He cried out to God not to take away the Holy Spirit As a direct response to David's repentance his sins were forgiven and he was known as a man after God's own heart

Manifestations and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Old and New Testaments

Both the Old and New Testaments contain record of supernatural deeds of human vessels wrought by the inspiration and empowerment of the Spirit of God. A closer study of the manifestation of such supernatural events show that the nature of the demonstration of the work of the Holy Spirit in the Old and the New Testament resemble very closely. In the New Testament, the miracles done by the apostles are listed as signs and wonders (s6meia kai terata.- In the LXX the usage of s6meia kai teorata is confined to wonders associated with Moses' leading the Israelites to their freedom from the hand of the Pharaoh of Egypt5. Thus, we see that the New Testament writers equated the miracles done by the apostles with the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to those done by the servants of God in the Old Testament. This is the supernatural empowerment, by the Spirit of the Lord, of a person, with the ability to heal physical afflictions. There are numerous accounts of physical healing in the Old Testament. The healing of Naaman by Elisha is an example (2 Kings 5:14).

The Workings of Miracles

Miracles are events that override the laws of nature. The Lord gave power to Moses to perform miracles. In fact God endows Moses with the gift and charges him to make sure that he performed wonders before the Pharaoh (Ex 4:21). Elijah and Elisha also performed several miracles. The floating ahead, where Elisha made a submerged ahead to float on water is a typical example of a miracle that defies the law of nature (2 Kings 6:6)

Prophecy

Prophecy is the declaration of the word of God by a human vessel. Prophecy was a common manifestation of the Sprint of God in the Old Testament. God chose several men to be his messengers and spoke through them to the people of Israel. Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, Nathan are examples of such prophets. There was even a school of prophets during the time of Elijah and Elisha (2 Kings 2:5).

The Discerning of Spirits

This is the supernatural ability to distinguish between spirits. It is recorded that God gave Solomon a wise and discerning heart (1 Kings 3:12) and great insight (1 Kings 4:29) that his fame spread to surrounding nations (1 Kings 4:31). Saul is recorded to have put away those that had familiar spirits and wizards out of the land (1 Sam. 28:3). The identification of a person operating with a familiar spirit is not possible without the operation of the gift of discernment of spirits. Thus, from this we deduce that this gift was operational during Saul's time.

Tongues and Interpretation of Tongues

Paul lists nine manifestations of the Holy Spirit in his epistle to the Corinthian Church. They are: Word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, prophecy, discerning of spirits, divers kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues (I Cor. 12:8-10). Seven of these gifts, with the exception of tongues and interpretation of tongues are recorded to have functioned in the Old Testament times.

Word of Wisdom

Word of wisdom is the supernatural wisdom imparted by God to solve a definite problem or need. The Bible declares that the Spirit of wisdom was on Joshua (Dt. 34:9). Solomon was also endowed with wisdom from on high. God gave Solomon Such a wise and understanding heart that he was recorded to have been wiser than his peers around the world (I Kings 4:29).

Word of Knowledge

Word of Knowledge is the supernatural enabling by the Spirit of God to know the past history or the future of an event. It can also be the complete understanding of a situation through the Spirit of God. Though he was not with Gehazi, Elisha knew that Gehazi had accepted bribe from Naaman (2 Kings 2:26). Elisha was a man of God so used to moving in this gift that when he did not find the reason for the death of the Shunammite woman's son he was surprised that the Lord had hid it from him (2 Kings 4:25).

Faith

This is a supernatural impartation of faith that rises beyond the realm of the natural and embraces the sovereign power of God that results in the moving of mountains. The I lth chapter of the book of Hebrews records that Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sara, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, and David are recorded to have moved in the gift of faith.

Gifts of Healing

There is no record of the operation of these two gifts in the Old Testament. This probably is t he New Testament fulfillment of a prophesy in the book of Isaiah where the prophet Prophesies that God will speak to His people through stammering lips and another tongue (Isaiah 28.1 1). Thus, we see that all gifts except tongues and interpretation of tongues were in operation in the Old Testament. However, it would be interesting to note the difference in the nature and quality of people on whom the gifts operated in during the Old Testament and New Testament times. In the Old Testament the vessels were a pitiful few, who were chosen and separated for God's work. Most of them were called to be Nazarites, a people separated unto the Lord. They were required to separate him from wine and strong drink, vinegar of wine, vinegar of strong drink, moist or dry grapes, things made of the vine tree. Nlazarite was not permitted to touch a dead body or cut his hair (Num. 6:2-8). In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit was promised to all flesh. The fulfillment of the prophecy by Joel came to pass on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit fell on about 120 believers. The atoning death of Jesus Christ on the cross brought forth reconciliation of man with God and resulted in the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all flesh, such that the sons and daughters of men were given the ability to prophesy, young men to see visions, and old men to dream dreams.

Spiritual Separation for Believers
By: Rev. Joseph C. Joseph, Dallas, USA.

II Cori. 6: 11-18

In the Old Testament separation was an ongoing requirement for God's people.

God commanded his people not to adopt the religious or to conform to the morals of the societies around them. Israel failed to observe fully this requirement, as a result they were not protected by the Lord. Under the new covenant, believers who confirm to the ways of the world will also forfeit the promises and protection of God. We cannot have God's blessings and presence and at the same time participation in the sinful ways of the world. (Exo. 23:20).

Christians today must distinguish themselves from their surrounding society by eating, drinking, and dressing so as to honor God with their bodies ( I Cori. 6:20; 10:31) and by rejecting all unholy social customs of unbelievers. They must be holy in all they do. (I Peter 1:15) All aspects of life must be regulated by God's will.

Any intimate association with people of the world will eventually destroy the separation and holiness of God's people. Such matters as intermarriage of God's people with unbelievers may turn believers away from following God. They were expected to be holy, different and separated from all other peoples in order to belonging to God as his very own. One key reason God punished his people with exile into Assyria and Babylon was their persistent desire to accommodate themselves to the idolatry and wicked lifestyles of the nations around them.

In the New Testament God commanded separation of believers (a) from the corrupt world. System and from unholy compromise. Our Lord's prayer for all believers was not they may be taken out of the world but they may be protected from the evil one because they are not of the world (John 17:15-16). The Holly Spirit has cautioned the believers that there will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God - having a form of godliness but denying its power. Here Paul refers to those who profess to be Christians and appear to be religious, but who do not manifest God's power that save them from sin, selfishness and immorality. Such people tolerate immorality with in their churches and teach that a person may practice the sins listed above and yet inherit Salvation and God's kingdom. Be away from them is the warning from God. (II Tim. 3:1-5) (b) From those in the church who sin and refuse to repent (Mathew 18: 15-19, II Tim. 5: 6-15, I Cori. 5: 9-11) (c) and from false teachers, churches or cults who teach theological error and deny Biblical truths. (Mat. 7:15; Rom. 16:17; Gal. 1:9; Titus 3: 9-11; 2 Pet. 2: 17-22, I John 4:1; 2 John 10-11; Jude 12-13).

Our attitude in separation must be one of (a) hatred toward sin, unrighteousness and the corrupt world system ( I John 2:15) (b) Opposition to false doctrine (Gal 1:9) (c) genuine love for those from whom we must separate (I Cori. 5:5; Gal 6:1; Jude 22).

The purposes of separation are that we as God's people might preserve in Salvation. We have to watch our life and doctrine closely. If we preserve in them we will save both ourselves and our hearers ( I Tim. 4:16; Rev. 2: 14-17). Being separated unto God we will preserve in faith and in holiness ( I Tim. 1:14; 6:10, 20-21; John 14:14-22; 2 Cori. 7:1).

As we are wholly committed for God as Our Lord and Father with all our heart and with all our soul, with all our mind, we will be endued with His power to convince the unbelieving world of the truth and blessings of the gospel (John 17:21; Phil. 2:15).

If we separate ourselves properly, God himself rewards us by drawing near with his protection, blessing and fatherly care. He promises to be everything that a good father should be. He will be our counselor and guide; he will love and cherish us as his own children ( 2 Cori. 6: 16-18 ).

The refusal of believers to separate themselves from evil will inevitably result in the loss of fellowship with God ( 2 Cori. 6:16) of acceptance by the father ( 2 Cori. 6:17) and rights as children ( 2 Cori. 6: 18; Rom. 8: 15-16).

What all things are to be observed as we separate ourselves unto God.

Propriety in Worship (I Cori. 11: 3-15).

In Paul's days the woman had to cover her head in order to show modesty and subordination to her husband and to demonstrate her dignity. The veil meant that she has to be respected and honored as a woman. Without a veil she has no dignity. Men did not respect women without veils because they were in effect flaunting themselves publicly and shamefully. Thus, the veil served as a sign of the value and glory of womanhood as God created her.

The principle behind the wearing of veils is still needed today. A Christian woman should dress in a modest and careful way, with honorable and dignified attire that allows her to go anywhere with security and profound respect. When dressing modestly and properly for the glory of God, a woman enhances her own God-given place of dignity and worth.

God desires that the physical difference between men and women be observed. Paul uses hair as an example., stating that the length of the hair of men and women should be such as to distinguish between one and the other. A woman's hair should be long in comparison to the man's symbolizing her acceptance of the dignity and worth of her womanhood as God created her ( 1 Cor. 11: 6). A man's hair, in contrast to the woman's should be short.

Women to dress modestly with decency ( 1 Tim. 2: 9-10).

It is God's will that Christian women dress modestly and discreetly. The word "decency" implies a certain shame in exposing the body. It involves a refusal to dress in such a way as to draw attention to the body and to pass the boundaries of prosper reserve. The source of modesty is in a person's heart or inner character. In other words, modesty is the outward manifestation of an inward purity.

Dressing immodestly, which may excite impure desires in others, is as wrong as the immoral desire it provoke. No activity or condition justifies the wearing of immodest attire that would expose the body in such a way as to stimulate lust in someone else. (Gal. 5: 13; Eph. 4:27; Titus 2: 11-12; Mt. 5:28).

It is a sad thing on any church when the Biblical standard for modest dress is ignored and the world's customs are passively adopted. In a day of sexual permissiveness, the church should act and dress differently from a corrupt society that throws aside and ridicules the spirits desire for modesty, purity and godly restraint ( Rom. 12: 1-2).

Do dot be yoked with Unbelievers ( II Cori. 6: 14-18).

Believers must not be in voluntary partnership or in intimate association with unbelievers for such relationship can corrupt their relationship with Christ. This includes partnership in business, marriage and close friendships. A Christian association with unbelievers should be only such as is necessary for social or economic existence, or to show unbelievers the way of Salvation.

Conclusion

The doctrine of separation touches every part of the life. It touches our personal and public life, our pleasures. Our amusements, habits, the food we eat, the dress we adopt, the books we read, the friendship we make and our daily occupation. It touches our inward and outward life ( II Cori. 7:1).

Let us examine our life in the light of what we discussed honestly.

1. Will it glorify God or not?
2. Will it promote or endanger our Christian life?
3. Will it help hinder a weaker brother?
4. Will it prosper or damage my witness?
5. Will it please or grieve the Holy Spirit?
6. Will it lead me into or out of God's will?
7. Will it adorn the doctrine of God?

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. ( 2 Tim. 2:19).

The truth about Sin and How to Defeat Satan
Mathew Joseph P.E., Dallas, USA.

"Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free!" Jesus Christ is the truth and when you really know Jesus Christ, He will set you free! Unfortunately, many Christians don't know Jesus Christ and what He really did for them. They know a Jesus but not THE JESUS. Jesus Christ came to set us free from sin. In this short article I will answer the following:

1. What is Sin?
2. What are the Consequences of Sin?
3. How to Discern the Deeds of the Devil?
4. God's Attitude towards Sin
5. Our Attitude towards Sin
6. How to not sin and defeat Satan?

"Some time ago, two Indians who had been watching a lighthouse go up came over to see the thing open on the big day. It was all set up with the lights and the bell and the horn; but the day it was due to open, the worst fog of all fogs came in.One Indian said to the other, "Light-Shine, bell- ring, horn-blow, but fog come in just the same."

"We've never had more lights shining, and bells ringing, and horns blowing in the church than we have today. We've never had more fog. (Vance Havner)

· This is the case with sin. We have clouded or fogged up the issues dealing with sin. "One reason sin flourishes is that it is treated like a cream puff instead of a rattlesnake." (Billy Sunday).

· Sin is the only thing that God abhors or hates. It brought Christ to the cross, it damns souls, it shuts heaven, and it laid the foundations of hell. (Thomas Brooks)

· "Sin is not weakness, it is a disease; it is red-handed rebellion against God and the magnitude of that rebellion is expressed by Calvary's cross."(Oswald Chambers)

· "Sin enough and you will soon be unconscious of sin!" (Oswald Chambers)

We are too Christian really to enjoy sinning, and too fond of sinning really to enjoy Christianity. Most of us know perfectly well what we ought to do; our trouble is that we do not want to do it.

Let's define what Sin really is? The truth about sin:

1) Sin is a transgression of the Law - lawlessness (1 John 3:4)
2) A grievous malady, contaminating the whole of man's being. (Isaiah 1:4,5; Romans 3:10-18)
3) An obscuring cloud, which hides the face of God's blessing (Isaiah 59:2)
4) A BINDING CORD which hold s man in its power (Proverbs 5:22)
5) An oppressive owner, who causes heartache to the lives of his slaves. (Nehemiah 9:37)
6) A disturber of rest, which causes disorder and anxiety. (Psalm 38:3)
7) A robber of blessing, which strips and starves the soul. (Jeremiah 5:25)
8) A terrible devastation, which brings untold desolation. (Micah 6:13)
9) A tripper-up, which continually overthrows the sinner to his hurt. (Proverbs 13:6)
10) A record writer, which leaves its permanent mark upon the committer. (Jeremiah 17:1)
11) A betraying presence, which "will out" no matter what pains are taken to hide it. (Ezekiel 21:24)
12) A sure detective, which turns upon the sinner and finds him out. (Numbers 32:23)
13) An accusing witness, who points its condemning finger at the prisoner in the bondage of sin. (Isaiah 59:12)
14) A sum addition which accumulates its weigh to the condemnation of the sinner. (Isaiah 30:1)
(Robert G. Lee)

Transgression - Hebrew and Greek words translated mean moral, religious, and national rebellion, revolt, unrighteousness, wickedness, violation, and breaking of law.

Sin is twofold: Outward Sin and Inbred Sin

The bible definition of Outward Sin:
1) "Sin is transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4)
2) "Where no law is, there is no transgression" (Romans 4:15)
3) "By the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3: 20; 7:7)
4) "Sin is not imputed when there is no law" (Romans 5:13)
5) "The thought of foolishness is sin" (Prov. 24:9; 2 Cor. 10:4-5)
6) "Without the law sin was dead" or dormant (Rom 7:8)
7) "Every idle word that men shall speak is sin" (Matt. 12:36-37)
8) "All unrighteousness is sin" (1 John 5:17)
9) "Whatsoever is not of faith is sin" (Romans 14:23)
10) "If ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin" (James 2:9)
11) "He that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin" (James 4:17)
12) All "actions" contrary to the law are sin . ( 1 Sam. 2:3; James 1: 13-1
13) "Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft" (1 Sam. 15:23)
14) Any "omission" of the law is sin (Matt. 23:23)
15) All "desires" and "lusts" contrary to the law, inwardly or outwardly manisfested are sin (Mark 7:19-21; Rom. 1:29-32; Gal. 5:16-21; Eph., 2: 3; Col. 3: 5-10; James 1:13-15).

The Bible definition of Inbred Sin:

1) "The prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience" (Eph. 2:1-3; 1 John 3:8, John 8:41-44) This is one statement that defines the "old man" and inbred sin. It is the devil himself working in men of disobedience in contrast with "the new man", which is the Spirit and nature of God working in the sons of obedience.

2) There are ther terms used in scriptures for "the old man" as the devil working in men are:

"Sin"- (John 1:29; 8:34, Rom. 6:4-22; 7:7-25; 8:2); "the body of sin"- Romans 6:6
"darkness" (Acts 26:18) "the body of this death" (Rom.7:24)
"the old man" (Rom 6:6, Eph.4:22-24) "the lusts of the flesh" (Eph. 2:3)
"the lust of the eyes" (1John 2:15-17) "the pride of life" (1 John 2:15-17)
"all ungodliness and all unrighteousness" (Rom 1:18) "the world" (1 John 2:15-17)
"vile affections" (Rom. 1:26) "the lusts of the mind" (Eph 2:3)
"a reprobate mind" (Rom. 1:28) " the lusts of sin" (Rom 6:11,12)
"the motions of sin"(Rom. 7:5) "the law of sin and death"(Rom 7:7-25; 8:2)
"the carnal mind" (Rom 8:1-13) "the works of the flesh"(Gal. 5:16-21, 24)
"the flesh" (Rom 8:1-13; Gal 5:24) the "carnal man" - (Rom 7:14-25)
"the power of Satan" (Acts 26:18) "the god of this world" (2 Cor. 4:3-4)
"principalities….powers…..the rulers of darkness of this world….spiritual wickedness in high places"(Ephesians 6:12)
"the lusts of your father" the devil (John 8:44) "sin that dwelleth in me" (Rom 7:7-25)
"the course of this world" (Eph. 2:2) "the body of the sins of the flesh" (Col. 2:11)

These passages clearly states that sin is more than transgression of the law or outward sin, and something separate from man himself.

Every one of these expressions proves that there is a real law of sin and death, and back of this law, executing it, a real power from a real nature and real person who is stronger than man himself.

It is the "old man", "the body of sin",and " the body of this death" that are to be destroyed, and not the body, soul, and spirit of man (Romans 6:1-22, 8:1-13; Gal.5:24; Col.2:11)

Consequences of Sin:

There are 5 consequences of sin that we need to know:

1) It causes Spiritual Blindness
2) One becomes Servant to Sin;
3) The end is Death
4) It continually torments
5) Separates you from God Eternally!

How to Discern the Deeds of the Devil?

"For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil" (1 John 3:8)

The devil does the following 5 things:
1. The Devil Distracts: "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us for we are not ignorant of his devices" (2 Cor. 2:11). The Satan is transformed into an angel of light. He attracts, distracts, and attacks (2 Cor. 11:14). We must resist the devil and draw nearer to God by watching and praying. (James 4: 7-8). "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful" (Psalms 1:1)- Notice it is a progression, it starts with the walk, then you stand among the sinners, and then you are helpless as you sit with the sinners. The bible tells us to flee away from where sin exists. Do not let the members of your body take you to places that Jesus would not go to. 2. The Devil Deceives: "… Satan …. Shall go out to deceive the nations…" (Rev. 20:7-8). Satan tries to frustrate God's people. His deception may cause the wrong to seem right and the right to seem wrong. Brothers and sisters if you are still having problems with sin in your life, you need to read what 1 John Chapter 3 and repent. Either you are in the light or you are in darkness. Either you are going to heaven or you are going to hell. There is no in-between state. Romans 6:1,2 says, "Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Verse 11 of Romans chapter 6 says, "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord." Satan deceives many so called Christians today and they don't even know it. 1 John 4:7,8 says, "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not - knoweth not God; for God is love." 1 John 3:6, 8-10 reads like this, "Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen Him, neither known Him. He that committeth sin is of the devil: for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God DOTH NOT COMMIT SIN - for his seed remaineth in Him. AND HE CANNOT SIN; for His seed remaineth in Him; and HE CANNOT SIN, because he is born of God. In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. 3. The Devil Disgraces: "… the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtility…." (2 Cor. 11:3). Satan uses temptation to bring many to disgrace. He tempts through illicit sex, the love of money, and the desire for popularity (1 Thess. 3:5). We can defeat Satan through faith (Eph. 6:16). Let us declare as Christ did, "Get thee behind me, Satan." We defeat Satan by the blood and the word of our testimony. Our testimony must be a victorious one rather than that of defeat. 4. The Devil Depresses: "… Satan … smote Job with sore boils .. "(Job 2:7). Satan discourages God's people. He afflicts them with testing, trial, trouble, and torment. God will help and heal, strengthen and sustain those who trust Him. He is greater than Satan is (1 John 4:4). Greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world. 5. The Devil Destroys: "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life…" (Rom. 6:23). Satan is in the sin business. His ultimate desire is to defeat God and destroy His people (1 Peter 5:8). Since God is more than a match for Satan, Satan is doomed for defeat. He shall be cast down and destroyed. (Rev. 12:10) Hallelujah!! God's Attitude toward Sin: God loves the sinner but hates the sin. Always, remember that God will not compromise in this matter. He wants you to acknowledge first that you have sinned. Then He wants you to go to Jesus Christ for your forgiveness. He wants you to walk in the Spirit and exercise Love since "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." Our Attitudes toward Sin If you haven't received Jesus as your Personal Savior, you need to first acknowledge that you have sin in your life and that you are a sinner. Regarding sin, you need to: · Confess It · Forsake it · Be Born Again · Resist the Devil and the temptations If you are born again and still struggling with sin in your life, read 1 John chapter 3. You need to first of all have faith in what the Lord Jesus Christ did for you. The same spirit that is in Jesus Christ and the Almighty God indwells in you. This spirit is holy and seeks after righteousness. This spirit will guide you into all truth. You need to realize that God expects you to be holy and separated from the world. The Holy Spirit is reminding you to shed some things in your life - right away; flee from the sin that's pulling you back; resist the devil and he will flee from you; Do not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinner, nor sit in the seat of the scornful but delight in the law of the Lord and meditate upon it day and night. Put on the whole spiritual armor of God every day for the day in which we live in is evil. Satan is going about like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Therefore, acknowledge your sins, confess your sins, forsake it, and resist the devil and put on the whole spiritual armor of God! Every morning, before getting out of bed pray the following prayer: "Father, I rededicate my life to you again… to you this morning. I give my life anew. Take my mind… conscious and unconscious mind. and fill both parts with your blessed, holy, and wholesome thoughts. Take my heart and empty it of all lesser loves and fill it with your love…full to overflowing so I can love you, every person I meet this day, and myself rightly… as you would have me love. Father, I clothe my body with these garments, I remember that I am to put on your armor if I am to be victorious in the temptations that will come my way today. I put on the shoes of peace, the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness (right living), the shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Holy Spirit, which is the word of God… the Bible. Also in prayer, I clothe each family member in God's armor. In addition I plead the Blood of Jesus over myself, and each family member: I also plead the Blood of Jesus over all personal and family belongings, property, transportation, homes, pets, relationships, jobs, etc. every area of life. I place each family member's mind especially ears and eyes of children under the Blood of Jesus. Now, father, I am ready to live this day. I am ready to live it in such a way that it will bring glory and honor to you for I am your child ready and willing to do what you want me to do. I give you charge over my talents and treasure, and put household and myself on your timetable. Please surround me with your angels. In the name of Jesus, I gag, bind, and rebuke any spirits contrary to the Holy Spirit (Satan and the demon powers), and forbid them access to anyone or anything for which I pray. I place all contrary spirits in the custody of Jesus, and forbid them to try to return or send any others in their place. Jesus, fill me and all for whom I pray with Your light, so that there will be no room for anything but YOU. Thank you Father, for Your Love. Thank you, Jesus, for your presence within me Thank you, Holy Spirit, for your power to put into practice what I believe Amen. God Bless you and Keep you is my prayer for you.
